For Florida to become a Top 10 global economy by 2030 we need a skilled, literate workforce equipped to succeed in the high-demand careers Florida’s excellent business climate has created. The new Florida Business Alliance for Early Learning's 2026 State of 3rd Grade Reading Proficiency in Florida report identifies the gap we need to close to ensure that 100% of 3rd-graders are on track and offers an actionable framework for how Florida’s business leaders can help.

Key Findings from the 2026 State of 3rd Grade Reading Proficiency in Florida report:
  • Progress is happening. This year, 60% of Florida’s third graders are reading at or above grade level, up from 57% last year and 55% the year before.
  • 49 of Florida's 67 counties improved from last year.
  • The largest gains came from small, rural counties.
  • English language learners posted the biggest jump of any group.
  • Chronic absenteeism and poverty remain the clearest predictors of low reading scores.

How Businesses Can Help:
  • Become champions for early literacy through volunteerism, advocacy, awareness, and local partnerships.
  • Use local data like the Florida Scorecard, Florida Gap Map, and Florida Talent Center Data Hub to target opportunities for resource investment.
  • Support evidence-based literacy instruction through teacher coaching, high-quality curriculum, and professional development.
