LAKELAND, Fla. — On Thursday, September 15, Southeastern University’s American Center for Political Leadership (ACPL) will host a Constitution Day event from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. featuring Florida Supreme Court Justice Charles T. Canady. The event will be held at the university’s Lakeland campus in the Buena Vida West Auditorium.

Justice Canady will be speaking on “The Constitution and the Rule of Law.” In addition, a representative of the Polk County Supervisor of Elections Office will be present from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. to answer questions and help attendees register to vote. 

Justice Canady earned his bachelor’s degree from Haverford College in 1976 and his juris doctor degree from Yale Law School in 1979. He practiced law at the Holland and Knight firm in Lakeland, Fla., and at Lane, Trohn, et al. Justice Canady served three terms in the Florida House of Representatives and four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was a member of the House Judiciary Committee and was the Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution for three terms.

Justice Canady was the General Counsel for Governor Jeb Bush, who appointed him to the Second District Court of Appeal for a term. He was appointed to the Florida Supreme Court in 2008 and served as Florida’s 54th Chief Justice from July 2010 to June 2012. Justice Canady was reelected as Chief Justice for a second term in 2018 and a third term in 2020.
