LAKELAND, FL (January 14, 2022) – Deputy City Manager Nicole Travis recently shared the news that she would be leaving the City of Lakeland to join the City of Tampa as the Administrator of Development and Economic Opportunity. The announcement was followed up by Tampa’s Mayor Jane Castor and the appointment is scheduled to be confirmed on February 3rd by the Tampa City Council during a regularly scheduled meeting. Travis will officially join the City of Tampa effective January 24th.
Travis started with the City of Lakeland in 2010 and during her time with the City, she held several senior management positions including CRA Project Manager, CRA Manager, and Director of Community & Economic Development. In early May 2021, she was named the Deputy City Manager. At the City of Lakeland, she worked on and lead notable projects that include the City’s Catalyst Plan, Mirrorton, Haus 820, the Yard on Mass, and the Federal Building redevelopment.
City Manager Shawn Sherrouse said, “This is a great opportunity for Nicole, and I am extremely proud of her. Nicole is one of the most talented public service professionals that I have had the pleasure of serving with and I wish her well in her new endeavor with the City of Tampa.”
Travis was instrumental in establishing and enhancing public-private partnerships building on Lakeland’s downtown revitalization. Under her leadership, policies and programs were developed to address Lakeland’s unique housing challenges and she has been instrumental in downtown visioning with the City’s Catalyst Plan. Travis also concentrated on customer-centric strategies. As the Director of Community & Economic Development, business practices were streamlined to improve customer service in permitting, making operations more efficient.
Travis said, “My tenure with the City of Lakeland has been one of the greatest opportunities in my professional career. I am thankful to the city managers that gave me the opportunity to lead the organization. City of Lakeland staff are world-class, and it has been a great honor to serve the citizens of this beautiful community.”
Prior to her leadership roles with the City of Lakeland, Travis began her public service career as an urban designer with the City of Tampa from 2006 to 2009. Her private sector work includes leading numerous projects at architectural firms in Florida and Virginia.
