LAKELAND, Fla. – Southeastern University has announced that Dr. James V. Shuls will be serving as the new dean for the College of Education beginning on July 1, 2021. As dean of the college, Shuls will also be working closely with the American Center for Political Leadership (ACPL).
Prior to accepting this new role, Shuls was an associate professor and the chair of the Educator Preparation & Leadership Department at the University of Missouri – St. Louis.
“Beyond the obvious academic and leadership qualifications, I look for two qualities in deans: hunger and capacity. Dr. James Shuls has both,” said Provost and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Meghan Griffin. “He’ll be a pace-setter on our team, and he’ll add interdisciplinary breadth to SEU’s American Center for Political Leadership. Dr. Shuls is already successful as a thought leader and education policy advocate, and we’re going to see his capacity unleashed at Southeastern.”
As a passionate advocate for policies concerning school choice and civic education, Shuls has earned a Ph.D. in education policy from the University of Arkansas as well as a master’s degree in elementary education from Missouri State University. He is currently a distinguished fellow of education policy at the Show-Me Institute in St. Louis, Mo., where he previously worked as the director of education policy. Shuls also has experience in the classroom teaching kindergarten, first, second and fifth grades.
With comprehensive research in the areas of teacher labor markets, school finance and school choice, Shuls has been published in various scholarly journals. In addition, he has been featured in numerous print publications as well as appearing on talk radio programs and television news.
Shuls remarked, “I am extremely honored to join the faculty of SEU. The college has a great record and tradition of producing high-quality educators who have a passion for shaping the lives of their students.”
